I read about this idea years ago. It teaches children how to prioritize their money.
For the past few years, we have done this. However it has only been recently that I have begun to see the ‘fruits of my labor’.
Here’s how it works.
Britton keeps three large mason jars on a shelf in our pantry.
When she gets her weekly allowance, she puts it in the jars. The…
1st $- goes to God
2nd $- gets Save
3rd $- goes to a Spend jar
This obviously reiterates the Bible’s teaching of giving your first and best to God. In this case, giving your first dollar to the Lord, then saving, then spending. Needless to say, like most of us, the Spend Jar gets spent as quickly as money gets deposited. Isn’t that the truth!
February is heart month- a campaign to promote awareness of heart disease, healthy lifestyles, etc.
Her school engages the children by promoting ‘Jump Rope for Life’. Each students gets sponors and in turn jump rope to promote healthy lifestyle choices. All proceeds go to the American Heart Association. An organization- along with Ronald McDonald and American Cancer Society – that I hold near and dear to my heart.
Well she emptied her large jar of saved quarters for the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser last week.
Fast forward to today… She is on her way to school now proudly carrying her $65 that she raised by knocking on neighbor’s doors, calling grandparents, and giving her entire savings. At each door she knocked on, she told them about her little sister’s heart and asked if they would donate. She knows how to drum up some money out of folks!
