Our little thick-haired 6 day old, although chunky, now needs to tan her fat rolls under the bilirubin light on the pediatric floor at the hospital. So back to the hospital both Mama and baby went today. Both my girls had jaundice- and yea, it’s no big deal in the scheme of things. But watching your baby get stuck with IV needles (particularly when the sweet nurse cannot ‘find’ their small veins), and spending time in a hospital- with your child as the patient- just feels… unnatural.
We beat ourselves up for thinking there was something we could have done to prevent an illness. Look back to now clearly see the symptoms, we somehow missed earlier. When the reality is, sometimes babies just get sick.
But we, as Moms, are always having to put things in perspective. Think of how it could be worse- say a silent little prayer for the Mom down the hall whose baby really is sick. Remind ourselves, if not me, then who? And try once again, to rain that perspective over our minds. Reminding ourselves, that this too, shall pass.
In the meantime, I know a pretty little baby with a dark Tropical tan in this blustery weather. I, for one, am jealous.
