I may have mentioned that our family has started renovating our family’s Old Florida beach cottage. When I say old I mean, well… vintage-esque. My Dad and his 7 brothers and sisters spent their summers here as children. One of my favorite pictures of my Dad as a little boy is where he and his 11 month-younger brother, Uncle Kris, are sitting cross legged on the screened in porch sporting their new summer Mohawks. The same front porch that my little boy now sits on (sans the Mohawk thankfully). My grandparents had 8 children, 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren (and counting!). Every year, for what seems like 100, we have an annual week-long Kuersteiner family reunion at St. Teresa beach (in this very cottage) which entails lots of porch rocking, gabbing and key lime pie. My Dad always looked forward to spending the week with all his brother and sisters- he even took the whole week off work.
This hard working 2 bedroom, 1 bath cottage is ready for some much-needed TLC.
We want to add modern conveniences (cabinets that close, an outdoor shower, a range) while maintaining the old beach cottage charm. I’m in love with coastal kitchen featured on HGTV.
It has similar bones to our cottage.
(This is the HGTV kitchen before photo. You can’t tell by the photos I’ve included but the layout is VERY similar.)
Closing off one wall in the kitchen to allow for more workspace, demo’ing the kitchen, relocating the entry to the house, adding a new door, and repairing wooden window beams and trim.
Mr. R and my brother-in-law drove to the coast last Saturday and demolished the entire kitchen, and made it back home in time for dinner. I love the exposed original brick- mighty purty.
While the project has turned into a bigger one than anticipated, we’re keeping on eye on the prize. Which is this...
When it’s all said and done we will have an updated cottage for the third, fourth and hopefully 5th generations to enjoy!
